Innovation Clusters and Reindustrialization

PI: Dr Sylvain Pierre Remy (LKYCIC, SUTD)

New industries form the basis of reindustrialization and tend to cluster around scientific research institutions. However, incumbent firms can opt out of such clusters, even as they can also drive deindustrialization by offshoring manufacturing. The extreme dominance of incumbent conglomerates has been an enduring concern in South Korea and makes it a benchmark for other deindustrializing economies. We conduct a spatial-temporal analysis of science and innovation within the Seoul Metropolitan Area to determine whether they have been clustering more noticeably, thus countering Korean deindustrialization.
