The Activating Outdoor Recreation Space— People Connection Playbook draws on mixed-methods research from Singapore to guide the creation of vibrant, inclusive outdoor recreation areas that foster meaningful connections between people and their environment. Five types of outdoor recreation spaces are examined in high-rise, high-density neighbourhoods. Findings highlight the importance of understanding residents’ daily recreation experiences and explore spatial and social needs often overlooked in urban design. By analysing who uses these spaces, when, where, how, and why, the playbook provides actionable insights for planners. Four key principles are identified to activate person-environment connection and P-E fit in outdoor recreation spaces: people-centric design, diverse spaces, varied programming, and placekeeping for sustainability. International case studies showcase innovative community engagement and best practices.
