Synopsis

Do ageing strata malls deserve a second life? Can its rejuvenation have an impact on the surrounding precinct or its spirit live on even when it gets demolished? Through the lenses of three strata-titled malls in Singapore, the talk will summarise a multi-year research exploring issues of ownership, heritage, culture, adaptation of these megastructures. Using an ethnographic approach, the study develops an engagement toolkit with stakeholders within the strata malls and discusses how mall adaptation and transformation could extend beyond the buildings to the precinct.

Speaker

Calvin is the founder of Spatial Anatomy, a research-oriented practice that responses to the complex processes of urban adaptation and transformation. Through an ethnographic lens, the firm has developed built works, masterplans, strategic consultancy, publications, exhibitions and activations in Singapore and the region. In parallel, Calvin is an educator at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, leading urbanism studios and was previously a visiting professor at the Korea National University of Arts. Calvin has exhibited internationally, featured on various news media and recognised for his unique approach towards design practice and social causes.
