Synopsis
It is often said that, “sustainability will be lost or won in our cities”. But the increasing interdependencies of the systems that comprise a city’s function and drive its evolution also increase its complexity and vulnerability to “shocks”. These have significant implications not only on urban residents’ wellbeing and resilience but also regionally and globally.
An interdisciplinary framework and approach to urban sustainability and resilience research based on the performance concept (around multiple or n-bottom-lines, nBL) and systems science applied at different scales is presented to better understand and support a whole-society approach to addressing these challenges. These are illustrated through a brief overview of a diverse range of research on climate change mitigation in the built environment, energy systems transitions, Hyperconnected City Logistics, disaster and community resilience and ecosystem services, including the role of digital and information technologies and stakeholder decision-making based on the Cynefin sensemaking framework.
Speaker
Prof Greg Foliente is Professor of Sustainable & Resilient Infrastructure and Urban Systems at the University of Melbourne, President and Board Chair for the non-profit International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment (iiSBE) and Venture Partner with the US-based Shadow Ventures. A scholar of global standing, he received the prestigious James Croes Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), amongst other awards, and has a publications record ranked in the top 1% amongst Civil Engineering researchers worldwide (based on the Stanford-Elsevier composite citation index). Greg has previously worked at the University of California (Berkeley) and the Australian national science agency, the CSIRO. He is an expert consultant to – and/or research collaborator with – industry, government and international institutions such as UN agencies. He received his PhD and 2 MSc degrees at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in the US, and executive leadership and management training at the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the MIT Sloan Executive Education.
