At scales below 100 nm, manufacturing techniques require of a precise molecular control and the use of very homogenous raw materials, which unfortunately is not the case for natural fibers. In this talk we will discuss some of the chemical and physical strategies developed in our laboratory to overcome these heterogeneity issues and we will explore how our work, at the frontiers of fiber science, intersects with the work of fashion designers. We will use several examples addressing textiles materials for fashion, sports and military applications and we will demonstrate how “old and traditional” natural fibers can be transformed into revolutionary engineering materials with unique functionalities.
About the speaker
Juan P. Hinestroza, a U.S. Fulbright Scholar, is a tenured Associate Professor of Fiber Science and directs The Textiles Nanotechnology Laboratory at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Professor Hinestroza has written over 80 peer–reviewed papers, has been granted 8 US Patents, is the co-founder of 3 start-up companies, and serves as consultant to major Fortune 50 corporations in the field of advanced manufacturing of smart and interactive textiles. Professor Hinestroza is the recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award and has delivered invited talks at more than 50 countries. His scientific work has been featured in media outlets such as CNN, The Guardian, Popular Science, NYTimes, and BBC. In addition to his scientific endeavors, Professor Hinestroza also works on engaging senior citizens in collaborative and inter-generational learning experiences.
