The Design Z Positive City Lab is dedicated to developing an urban design methodology that fosters both individual flourishing and collective societal progress. Through our approach, known as ‘Positive Urbanism,’ we emphasize the potential of environmental design and systems to generate medium-term incentives and long-term positive impacts, striving to achieve a balance that supports both ecological and human well-being.

Our research focuses on three core domains:
1. Data Science: Exploring the interrelationships between environmental attributes, sustainable planning, and physical, mental, and social well-being.
2. Citizen Science: Employing design ethnography to evaluate communities practicing climate-positive actions and the resulting impacts on their well-being.
3. Generative Design: Developing innovative design proposals and future scenario planning that embody Positive Urbanism, guided by insights from data science and citizen science.

Through these efforts, the Positive City Lab contributes to urban policy and design knowledge on a global scale. Our work extends beyond advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—particularly ‘Good Health and Well-being,’ ‘Responsible Consumption and Production,’ and ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities.’ It also sheds light on the intricate interplay between these goals.

We believe that harmony between environmental sustainability and human well-being is achievable. By implementing strategies that restore ecosystems, ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities, foster social cohesion, and enhance quality of life, we aim to create a sustainable and thriving future for all.
