This research examines the evolving role of traditional mamak shops in Singapore. Historically, established by Indian and Chinese migrants, these shops provided daily necessities and served as cultural touchpoints. We explore the historical and current significance of mamak shops with changes in consumer behaviours and increased competition from chain supermarkets and convenience stores, building on initiatives like the HDB Revitalization of Shops Scheme and the Heartland Innovation and Transformation Program. We are focusing on community-driven approaches to enhance their competitiveness and vitality through design and participation, to explore how they might stay relevant in Singapore’s urban landscape.
Aligned with the Positive City Lab’s focus on Positive Urbanism, this research highlights how mamak stores, as community-centric spaces, can foster cultural preservation, promote social cohesion, and drive sustainable practices. Ultimately, we aim to demonstrate how traditional urban spaces can contribute to positive urbanism and broader societal progress by supporting both cultural heritage and environmental sustainability in an increasingly dynamic urban landscape.
