This project aims to redefine the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace by moving beyond the traditional competitive framework often exemplified by the Turing Test, which focuses on whether AI can convincingly replicate human behavior. Instead of positioning AI as a competitor, this project adopts a “Working As ONE” model, a collaborative approach where humans and AI combine their strengths to address complex challenges. This perspective builds on key insights from previous research conducted by the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities, which highlight why an interactions-centric approach is more powerful than a siloed view in fostering resilience and innovation. By reframing AI as a complementary partner, we seek to transform the future of work from one characterized by job displacement into one driven by shared innovation, aligning with Singapore University of Technology and Design’s (SUTD) mission to advance education and societal progress.
The core of this study is the 10:10:10:1 framework, a systematic methodology designed to explore the collaborative potential of humans and AI across various activities. This approach identifies 10 key domains—spanning engineering, humanities, social sciences, and robotics—each with 10 representative tasks. Through comparative analysis, we will assess how humans, AI, and human-AI collaborations perform on these tasks, generating insights into the unique contributions of each. The goal is to uncover 10 key findings to inform the future of work, education, and learning. This framework addresses critical research questions, focusing on where humans excel, where AI outperforms, and where collaboration offers optimal results.
Through this research, we aim to demonstrate that AI can play a transformative role in work and education without diminishing human contributions. By establishing a framework for human-AI collaboration, this project provides a foundation for a future where AI enhances human agency, creativity, and productivity. This new model sets a precedent for AI integration that benefits SUTD, Singapore, and the broader global workforce, highlighting the potential of a collaborative approach to advance individual, economic, and societal potential.
