The Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (LKYCIC) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) recently to explore research and academic collaborations in cities.  

As part of the collaboration, a delegation comprising Prof Cheong Koon Hean, Dr Harvey Neo and Dr Samuel Chng (LKYCIC) and Assoc Prof Yeo Kang Shua (Architecture and Sustainable Design; ASD) visited Shanghai from 20 to 24 Aug 2023 for an academic exchange with the Shanghai Academy of Social Science.  

Public Lecture and Dialogue 

Prof Cheong delivered a public lecture on 21 Aug 2023 titled ‘City Metamorphosis: Urban Innovations Shaping Singapore’, jointly organised by the Institute of Urban Design and Demographic Studies (IUDS) – Shanghai Academy of Social Science (SASS) and the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design (CAUPD; Shanghai Branch) at the Shanghai Design Centre. The lecture was moderated by Sun Juan, Dean of China Academy of Urban Planning Design – Shanghai Branch. 

A roundtable dialogue followed the lecture with Wang Kai, President of China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, Xiong Jian (Secretary of CPC and Vice Director of Shanghai Urban Planning and Design Research Institute) and Prof Cheong, moderated by Prof Tu Qiyu, Deputy Director of the Institute of Urban and Demographics Studies at SASS.

   

Research and Academic Exchange  

The delegation met with Prof Wang Dezhong (President of SASS), Prof Zhu Guohong (Vice-President of SASS) and Prof Cheng Fucai (Director of International Cooperation Department, SASS) in a wide-ranging discussion on potential synergies and collaborations in research and academic activities with LKYCIC.  

Further in-depth sharing and discussion of research projects was held with the Institute of Urban Design and Demographic Studies (IUDS), one of 17 research institutes in SASS. The session was co-hosted by Prof Zhou Haiwang, Deputy Director of IUDS-SASS and Prof Cheong, LKYCIC, and co-facilitated by Prof Tu Qi Yu, Deputy Director of IUDS-SASS and Dr Harvey Neo, LKYCIC.
